If you’re looking for an awesome place to visit for relaxation and understated enjoyment, then you don’t have to look beyond Hot Springs, Arkansas.  When you visit Hot Springs, Arkansas you will find unique beauty and history against a backdrop of a chill and welcoming urban scene.Made famous for its thermal waters which naturally occur at an average temperature of over 140 degrees Fahrenheit and previously were thought to have medicinal powers, Hot Springs is no stranger to rolling out the red-carpet for visitors.  With a population of approximately 35 thousand, this small city has welcomed guests for generations that wanted to partake of the healing properties of the water in one of the area bathhouses.

Even with the awesome attraction of the thermal waters (which are protected and regulated by Hot Springs National Park), Hot Springs, Arkansas offers so much more. So, what makes this city such a relaxing and understated place? Let’s explore six reasons below:

#1: Hot Springs, Arkansas is not super touristy

If you look forward to sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic in order to line up for a day at Ripley’s Believe it Or Not or Wonderworks, then you will not enjoy Hot Springs.

Instead, the most eye-catching attractions are the bathhouses themselves, the local shops and urban backdrop that features unique architecture that is built into the natural terrain.

Check out the Kenneth Adair Memorial Park that is an open space in between historical buildings to get a sense of the local vibe downtown.  It is a great place to take a seat while walking around the downtown and to meet folks enjoying their day.

#2: Hot Springs National Park offers a welcoming national treasure

Because Hot Springs, Arkansas has been welcoming visitors for decades, a rich history is at your fingertips.  Most prominently, Hot Springs National Park is located in the heart of the city, and the grounds are beautifully kept.  When visiting the National Park, you learn about the bathhouses and waters that have made Hot Springs, Arkansas the destination that it is.  An additional unique perk is that you can bathe in the thermal waters at one of the active bath houses.  Check out our recommendations of things to do in Hot Springs National Park.

#3: Hot Springs, Arkansas has a walkable downtown

During our visit, we got to get out and stroll to neighboring shops, restaurants (check out our favorite places to grab a bite to eat), and areas for entertainment. Even though Central Avenue, the main stretch through the downtown) has quite a bit of vehicle traffic, the sidewalks and walkways that run behind the bathhouse row make this area extremely walkable.

Additionally, we stayed at the Waters Hotel which had many advantages.  One of those advantages is that it is located directly across the street from Hot Springs National Park and, and that means that it is right in the heart of the downtown strip of activity.  You can literally walk out the front doors and find entertainment, local shops, dining and fresh air only a few steps in any direction.

#4: You get to experience history

Interested in the history of mob and mafia legends like Al Capone? You’re in the right place. Want to learn about medical treatments of the past? Look no further than the Fordyce Bathhouse! How about checking out some unique architectural displays?  Presidential history (Hot Springs touts itself as the hometown of former President of the United States, Bill Clinton)? More?

#5: Hot Springs, Arkansas has great places to eat

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all on point with some great local restaurants serving diverse flavors from dawn ‘til dusk.  When you visit Hot Springs, you can also dine in the restaurants that were frequented by mobsters (some restaurants even have speak-easy settings).  Check out our favorite places to eat in Hot Springs by clicking here.

#6: There are a number of beautiful lakes in the area with plenty to do outdoors

Lakes and state parks in the area offer outdoor recreation, boating and fishing opportunities. It is easy to get an Arkansas Fishing License.  We got a 3-day fishing license in about 10 minutes using our mobile phones, and were able to save a copy before heading to the lakes.

Check out the crystal-clear waters of Lake Ouachita (pronounced ‘Wash-it-ahh’ to save a little embarrassment), the fishing competitions at Late Hamilton, or the expansive Lake Catherine which are all a short drive from downtown Hot Springs.
