My favorite time of year to travel is in the late spring / early summer months. As a Midwesterner, I welcome spring because it brings new energy to my life. The air is crisper, the days grow longer, and the promise of new beginnings surrounds me!

Springtime is also the perfect time to reacquaint yourself with the outdoors. Winter sports are fun, but not always accessible, so I often find excuses in the depths of winter to curl up by the fireplace and sip hot cocoa. But in the spring, the natural glow of the sun shaves off the nip in the air as I stretch the day and take advantage of the outdoors to walk, and smell the fresh buds on the flowers and trees.

Road trips are also easier in the spring because the likelihood of inclement weather altering your plans is negligible. Instead, you can make concrete plans to take some time away from your daily grind and explore a new place. This is my bliss!

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Sign
One of my favorite spring trips was a tour of the Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania Parks in which we visited a number of significant Civil War sites. Harpers Ferry was one of my favorite places, and the beautiful spring day on which we visited is captured in that blossoming tree! (from April 2015)

Here are other reasons that spring is the best time to take a road trip:

#1: It’s generally cheaper to travel in the spring when compared to summer.

Barring popular spring break destinations, spring (prior to Memorial Day) is considered off-peak for a number of destinations.  Once kids are out of school for the summer, the demand for popular vacation destinations picks up, and you are competing with other families for the best times.  With more demand, prices are driven higher.  Enjoy the shoulder season in the spring to take advantage of lower prices.

#2: You can often have a more “chill” vacation as kids are often still in school.

This means that you will likely encounter a more relaxed vibe in the places that you visit.

#3: Cabin fever is real! Take a break from it!

After being cooped up in the house all winter, there is nothing more exciting and motivating than getting out of the house to explore a new place.  Give yourself a break before the deep spring cleaning season, and take a weekend away for some much needed self-care and re-centering!

#4: You beat the heat!

That’s right – spring means warming temperatures, but not the sweltering heat that some destinations have in their peak summer months.  Destinations in the south (like Florida and South Carolina) are some of my favorites.  There is definitely a difference between the spring temperatures which are pleasant and manageable and the oppressive summer heat that will leave you wishing again for winter… no? ok, maybe not that bad. 🙂

#5: You often don’t have to “compete” with coworkers to take time off.

Because many families (including your coworkers) plan summer vacations, it is easier to get time out of the office in the spring without scheduling times where your entire team is out of the office at once.  That being said, it’s easier to get time off with no issues.

Devils Tower National Monument
Our road trip to South Dakota in May 2017 was powerful. It was our first trip where we visited National Parks that were west of the Mississippi River, and we were amazed by the beautiful landscapes and scenes that we don’t get to see in the Midwest.
