The South Carolina Lowcountry is perhaps one of my favorite places in the United States. One of the best ways to experience this part of the U.S. is on a Charleston to Savannah road trip. This road trip will take you between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA (with a quick stop in Hilton Head Island). I’ve done some variation of this trip more than once, and it’s definitely one to add to your travel bucket list! Disclosure: This article contains affiliate links. One of my favorite park experiences was witnessing the swearing in of our nephew as a Junior Ranger at the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument. You too can create an awesome experience at this intimate National Monument. Here, you will learn about the life and service of Colonel Charles Young, one of the first African-American Westpoint graduates. You will also get to explore the history of the Buffalo Soldiers, African-American army units composed of the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry. Visiting the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument Not far from our Central Ohio home is one of the newer National Park Units, the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument. This park is located in Xenia, Ohio near Wilberforce University, an Historically Black University. This is where the famous Coloner, Charles Young, lived and taught. During our summer visit, the weather was nice…
I officially LOVE reading lists of travels like the one we’re sharing here! Putting together our National Park trips timeline was therapeutic in a sense. In creating this, I got to see my own growth and development that has been directly shaped by the travel I have completed. Lists like this are also interesting because you get to see the logistical fit of the sites visited. I will do my best to group itineraries and link to things we may have shared on this site that can help with your own planning. A couple of other guiding thoughts: since we both work full time jobs, we usually have one “major” trip each year and several others on the periphery we like to visit as many sites as we can fit into our limited vacation days, so the pace of our trips is often pretty fast I’m only including parks that…
There are nine National Parks in Alabama, each with unique experiences to be had. We have had the good fortune of visiting each Alabama National Park, and want to share them with you so you can make the most of your own visit! I grew up visiting Alabama frequently. My mom was born and raised in Birmingham, and attended college at Talladega College, located only miles from the famous Talladega Speedway. Much of my family still lives in Alabama, so packing up a car and heading down from Ohio to Alabama for holidays and vacations was commonplace in my youth. Alabama: Welcome to the South Alabama is a state with a lot of history formed of natural and human history that dates back to 10,000 years BC. The state also was at the center of many momentous events of the Civil Rights movement. Alabama National Parks preserve a lot of…

This Las Vegas National Park road trip includes 12 National Park Units in Nevada, Southern Utah, Arizona and California covered in 6 days – all from a starting point in Las Vegas. Day 1: Experience Great Basin National Park Road trip from Las Vegas to Great Basin National Park We arrived in McCarran airport right around 8am Pacific. Our early arrival was extremely helpful to us as we had to pick up our luggage, pick up our rental car, grab some groceries and necessities for our road trip, and make it to Great Basin National Park…
The wind was whipping, and the inches of snow that lined the path to the overlook stretched only about 30 yards or so in front of me. This, and Jason’s ultra-cautious warning that the weather wasn’t good for this short jaunt were the only deterrents that stood between me and what was to be my grand overlook into the beautiful hoodoos that formed Cedar Breaks. The Quest for the Ultimate Cedar Breaks View I stepped out of the car, immediately frigid from being beaten in the face by the wind, but determined to put one foot in front of the other to see the awe-inspiring view. I stepped in a path of footprints in the snow that was made by a previous onlooker – evidence that others too had been drawn to the views. Until those steps ran out… and the 30 yards seemed to grow into a football field…
We just got back from our visit to Camp Nelson National Monument – the 66th of our National Park Unit visits! Despite a rainy forecast, it was a great time to visit because we got to meet up with our friends at TNA Travels and do some adventuring with them around Louisville, KY! We also celebrated the start of National Park Week (score!) What is National Park Week? If you can, get out and explore a park near you! Don’t know where your nearest park is? Take a look at this map. More details on National Park Week is found at the end of this article. We recently shared that we will be flying into Las Vegas to enjoy 11 days of adventure. The second day of our journey will take us to Cedar Breaks National Monument and Bryce Canyon National Park. This is the second post in a series that we are writing about what we plan to do during our Las Vegas road trip. We invite you to follow along on our journey! Marching Downward in Elevation We recently shared our travel plans with Jason’s step-mother who worked out west for a number of years as a geologist. She is a wealth of knowledge about the rocks and formations that we will see on our trip. One visual that she gave us that I thought that I’d share for a little context for the Parks that we are going to visit is as follows: in Bryce Canyon, you will be in the rocks at…
